CBD and the Sleep-Wake Cycle: How CBD Works for Insomnia
CBD is a cannabis compound found naturally occurring in the cannabis plant.
CBD does not work as a sedative like its psychoactive counterpart THC, many that use CBD for insomnia notice that its calming and stress-relieving properties allow them to relax and enjoy a full night’s rest.
In addition to the positive feedback from those that use CBD for their insomnia, recent research indicates that CBD may indeed help provide relief from insomnia and other sleeping disorders.
In a 2006 study, researchers administered CBD to rats in order to understand how CBD affected their sleep-wake cycle. What they discovered is that during the tests daylight hours, the rats become more alert; however, at night, the alertness did not affect their sleeping pattern.
This shows us that CBD may provide users with a more balanced sleep-wake cycle by preventing daytime sleepiness to ensure our body and mind can properly rest at night.
How CBD Combats the Root Causes of Insomnia
To better support this theory, it is important to understand CBD’s relationship with our body’s Endocannabinoid System (ECS). The ECS is a group of receptors throughout our nervous system that regulates many different functions in our bodies such as our stress/anxiety response, our body temperature and our mood levels. When CBD interacts with our ECS it helps improve how our body regulates these functions to provide balance throughout the body.
That being said, CBD is not alleviating insomnia by sedating the body, but rather by combatting the causes of insomnia (anxiety, stress, chemical imbalance) to provide calmness and balance. This allows the user to enjoy a good night’s rest and follow a natural sleep-wake cycle.
